Design Methodology
During this research-focused class, Andrew Van Offeren, Hannah Byers and I teamed up to research childhood poverty in Cincinnati. We ended up focusing our project on the coping mechanisms children use when dealing with high stress situations. The end result became a workbook for 4th graders that gives children the space to explore their emotions in a healthy way. The immediate goal is for them to slowly build better intrapersonal and interpersonal skills so that they can be better equipped for the next school year.
The inside spreads have a black and white color scheme so this workbook can be both accessible and cost-effective.
The prompts inside include: mindful breathing, empathy-building through reflective writing, and art therapy inspired drawing prompts. Each exercise relates to the feeling they relate to.

User Testing
We tested our student exercises to see if the level of literacy was appropriate for this age range, and saw how the children interacted with the material. Were they engaged? Did they feel better afterward?
